We have begun to look at Number Sense, and will be reading, representing, comparing and ordering large numbers this week. In Grade 3, we work on numbers to 1000, while in Grade 4, we are thinking about numbers to 10 000. We had a really interesting exploration on Thursday, where we represented numbers using "jewels" of different values. I was very impressed with the representations that were discovered.
We used pattern blocks as our jewels, and worked to represent the target number in different ways. The picture below shows some of the student thinking for the number 146. I was really pleased when students decided to add two values, the square = 5 and the white rhombus = 50. This gave us even more possibilities. Thanks go out to Sabrina and Mary for these suggestions.
