The students are working on a Health assignment with Mme Henry. The success criteria for this assignment are attached. Students will be working on this assignment in class, and I've also created an assignment space in Showbie, so that they can upload any work or pictures that they want to use from home. Students can then access their Showbie account at school and easily work with their materials. They will be working with Explain Everything at school, so any additional work should be in the form of a photo, for easy use.

We are getting ready for our Christmas Concert. All students in our pod will have a role, either as a speaker, a dancer or a singer. Students will be bringing home practice materials for their own part in the next couple of days. All students need to learn the chorus of the song "Christmas Star", by Cece Winans. The full song lyrics are attached below. There's a light that shines on everyone Burning brighter everyday For the souls who search for peace on earth It's the Christmas star that lights the way Students can practice the song by singing along with the following link:
We are now using a new tool to do some of our work. Showbie is a free app or website that students can use anywhere, on any device. We've set them up with logins and passwords and have started our first assignment. To make life easier, we've used the same login and password as the one we use for Prodigy (or for StudyLadder, in the case of a couple of students).
Here are the advantages of Showbie:
If you have any questions about Showbie, please send me a note in the agenda. You can check it out directly by clicking on this button. Once you get to the Showbie main page, just click on "sign in" in the top right corner. Just a friendly reminder that the Cubs Caring Community is collecting new warm socks, hats, mitts and scarves to donate to the Elgin St. Mission. The last day for donations is tomorrow - Tuesday, November 24th. We have many members of the Cubs Caring Community club in our class. It would be great if we had lots of donations! Thanks in advance for your support.
Hello Everyone!
Enjoy this "long" weekend. A reminder that Monday is a PA day, so there will be no school. Please check out the posters on the Social Studies page. We're pretty proud of our work. After comparing these posters to our success criteria, we are creating a poster on our own. This new poster is about a tree that grows in North Eastern Ontario, and will help us to finish up our science unit on plants. Look for these posters to be uploaded next week. I hope the plants are growing well at home. Thanks for helping students to record their observations on Wednesday. We'll be bringing our science notebooks home again next Wednesday, for another observation. This is a great time to practice measuring in cm. Parent Teacher interviews are scheduled for Thursday. If this time really doesn't work for you, please send me a note in the agenda and we'll try to come up with another time to meet either in person or on the phone. I look forward to talking with all of you this week and celebrating the excellent learning skills that I'm seeing in the classroom every day. We would love for you to read our newest book "We Are Important". Using The Important Book as a model, we wrote detailed paragraphs about the strengths and gifts of each of the students in the class. You can view this book on the English page.
We had the opportunity to participate in a calendar contest recently. Each student was invited to create a page that showed why they thought Sudbury was an awesome city. This activity gave us a chance to practice making a plan, and we were also able to think about the layout and focal point of a great poster. Our finished products were fabulous, because of the care that each person took to develop a plan. Here are our calendar pages... In math, we are working on a unit in Number Sense. The class is thinking about numbers to 1000 (Grade 3) and to 10 000 (Grade 4). We are working on composing and decomposing numbers, writing them in words (we have a glossary to help us with spelling), putting them in order, comparing them, and representing them in different ways. One really important concept to remember with larger numbers is that we can represent them using materials like base 10 blocks. I can represent 245 using different combinations of blocks. See the examples below. Both of these images represent 245. In the first example, there are 2 hundreds blocks, 4 tens blocks and 5 ones blocks. In the second example, we replaced one of the hundreds blocks with 10 tens blocks. This means we can represent 245 with 1 hundreds block, 14 tens blocs and 5 ones blocks. What are some other ways we can represent this number?
We are also representing money amounts using coins and bills (to $10 in Gr 3 and $100 in Gr 4). Note that in French, the dollar sign goes after the money amount, and the decimal point is represented with a comma, rather than a period. [ 4,25$] We want to be able to count up from 4,35$ to 5,00$ for example, to give change. A terrific way to practice this is to play store at home. I've also added practice activities to Prodigy and Study Ladder. Finally, we are beginning to look at rounding. This week, I just want students to be able to find the nearest 10 or 100 to any number. We will be using a human number line in the classroom, to make sense of this important number concept. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me in the agenda. Last week, we figured out some interesting things about plants in Science, and started a class experiment to see if we could create new plants out of cuttings. We have made predictions about how many days it might take for roots to appear. We'll keep you posted as we make our observations. During the coming week, we will be talking about the interdependence of plants, the land, animals and people, with the help of the Magic School Bus. In Math, we completed our first math test on Friday. Students worked really diligently to solve problems and share their ideas. The tests and feedback will be coming home for your signature. Please sign and return them so that we can add the test to our portfolio. Students who need additional practice with patterning will be offered a re-test on Thursday, October 29th.
We have begun to look at Number Sense, and will be reading, representing, comparing and ordering large numbers this week. In Grade 3, we work on numbers to 1000, while in Grade 4, we are thinking about numbers to 10 000. We had a really interesting exploration on Thursday, where we represented numbers using "jewels" of different values. I was very impressed with the representations that were discovered. We used pattern blocks as our jewels, and worked to represent the target number in different ways. The picture below shows some of the student thinking for the number 146. I was really pleased when students decided to add two values, the square = 5 and the white rhombus = 50. This gave us even more possibilities. Thanks go out to Sabrina and Mary for these suggestions. As you can see, our class has had a productive week. We created our mission statement together (see the photo above) and will be posting it on our classroom door. As scientists, we observed the plants in our classroom and in math we looked at decreasing patterns. We made an excellent connection between T-charts in math and our observation tables in science and language, noticing that these tables help us to see what's happening. Tables and charts are very important types of texts, and we are very good at reading and understanding them. We are also using a sticker chart to keep track of our written work (we are so PROACTIVE!). Students find it easy to see what tasks need to be completed and make excellent use of their time. Here's a photo of our "We Are Authors" board. This week, we completed an activity called "Books Make Me Happy", where students chose a particular book and explained why it made them happy. This helps us to see how we are all different, and have different interests. It also helps me to select texts for the class. There will be a MATH TEST on Friday October 16. A note will be coming home in the agenda today that looks like this... We have finished our new learning about patterns and will be having an assessment on Friday, October 16. We have learned how to recognize how patterns are changing. We can extend them. We can find missing terms. We can predict what will happen later in a pattern. We can describe patterns that increase, decrease and repeat. We have practiced using math language together. You will notice that we have done lots of different types of practice activities, and that some of them might not be finished. We are bringing our math bag home for the weekend (and next week, if we need it), so that we can finish our practice activities. We will be taking up problems as a group on Tuesday. If more practice is needed, please go to the math page and click on Nelson Math. Try activities in chapter 1. This is what our math board looks like right now. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. Enjoy the family time!
